1980 Custom William Garden Design Trawler
Sayonara was William Garden's response to a request for a heavy, deep draft vessel patterned after the West Coast commercial halibut schooners for a Mr. William Trenholm. Mr. Trenholm was well known in Victoria, British Columbia’s yachting and fishing community. He previously had built 2 Garden designed boats. After 23,000 hours of labour by Mr. Trenholm and his crew, Sayonara was built. As the two black and white photos, taken by William Garden during her construction illustrate, Sayonara is a massively built vessel using sister keelson construction with oak ribs and fir planking. The planking is with 1-3/4" fir on 2”x4” white oak frames spaced at 10” centers.
Approximately ten tons of gumwood are used in the Sayonara, including the stem, sternpost, keel shoe, ring timbers, engine beds and cap rails.
She is ballasted with lead ballast bars in lieu of the standard concrete.
Sayonara is powered with a Gardner 8L3 diesel engine driving a 3:1 reduction gear to a 3 ¼” stainless steel shaft to a 4 blade 54/44 RH bronze propeller providing the best of reliable power while being extremely economical at 4.5 gallons per hour at a cruise speed of just under 9 knots.
She was designed and built with an expedient type of cruising in mind and has cruised every year to the West Coast of Vancouver Island, including a voyage to Alaska.
Sayonara has been housed in a boathouse since the day she was launched. She resides in that same boathouse today.
The present owner has undertaken extensive interior refinishing over the last few years. This work has included new holly and teak cabin soles in the wheelhouse, galley, salon, aft cabin and aft head.
Wheelhouse counter tops were replaced with natural Quartz stone. The old electronics were removed and replaced with new Garmin radar, GPSMAP, AIS, and VHF. The original Wagner Auto Pilot was retained. All existing wiring in the wheelhouse was redone and redirected to be hidden behind custom teak covers.
Sayonara has a 3 station hydraulic steering system, which include wheelhouse, bridge deck and aft deck. This commercial hydraulic system was rebuilt this summer 2023.
Her diesel heating furnace, used to preheat the engine and the fore and aft cabins, is new.
The galley has custom stainless steel refrigeration with a second freezer aft of the main salon. She has a commercial Dickinson diesel range that, along with the engine, heats a substantial hot water tank. The galley countertops have been replaced with natural Quartz stone and a new galley sink and faucet, with indirect LED lighting, were installed.
Main salon and settee were rebuilt and reupholstered. The main table was replaced so it could be permanently mounted with a lift mechanism to allow coffee table and dinning table configuration.
The aft cabin provides two queen berths with the new starboard berth configured to provide a lounging area as well. The aft head was gutted and expanded, to provide a new electric head, washing machine, and laundry hamper. The aft head provides a full size shower, indirect LED lighting and natural Quartz stone countertops.
Sayonara has a commercial Harrison and Robbins hydraulic anchor winch with 110’ of 5/8 chain and 600’ of 1” nylon rode and utilizes 350lb Forfjord anchor.
Port and starboard gates were recently installed with custom made bronze hinges and latches. A boarding step and a custom landing platform were recently built to provide easy access to her aluminum hull Ocean Air RIB. The dinghy is launched by a hydraulic winch and boom system.
The renovated interior work listed above is new and has not been used. The vessel is for sale due to a recent change in the owner’s plans. Due to this change in the owner’s plans, the forward cabin and forward head, which were scheduled for renovation this winter, are in their original condition and configuration. The owner, an architect, will be available to assist in this future project if the potential new owner wishes.
